[…] I was against Reyes’ acquisition from the jump and I’ve made no secret of my distaste for the team acquiring someone with heinous actions on their ledger. Despite my sincere wish that he wasn’t a part of this team, it would be remiss to note that–from a baseball perspective only–this front office has completely justified his acquisition. I wasn’t sure before that adding a player like Reyes and sticking him at third base would be a performance upgrade over a player like Wilmer Flores or Ty Kelly. […]

[…] The fact that the MLB has policy governing this kind of behavior speaks to both the seriousness of the alleged crime and the prevalence of the problem, in baseball and in professional sports at large. The violent nature of the wrongdoing is the reason why we should care about it more than we do Daniel Murphy’s homophobic idiocy or Colon’s lecherous and financially irresponsible behavior. (Though, yes, we should care about these, too.) And yet, as several BP Mets authors have written before me, all too often teams and fans alike allow the need to win to override our ability or desire to make good moral choices.
Seems you do know exactly the type of people you cheer for, and don't care. I get it but let's not pretend that it is anything other than what it is. Cheering for laundry does not excuse anyone from accepting inexcusable behavior for a few wins. But that is what sports fans do. We have had so many examples over the years. Only one question. Would you feel differently if Reyes was "allegedly" beating up on your sister or daughter?

You have the moral high ground here, so I can't argue with it on moral grounds. We root for a team which was purchased with money backed by the worst of corrupt business practices. The Mets franchise was originally owned by a right-wing ideologue, with more than a tinge of racism in the way they dealt with players. In the glory years of the 80s, we rooted for actual criminals, coke heads and a man, Kevin Mitchell, who was traded because he was a bad influence on Daryl Strawberry - think of what he must have been like. Hell, Keith Hernandez is a beloved broadcaster in spite of his drug history. We know what Daniel Murphy was when we had him.
The point is, we don't know the kind of people we root for. As Jerry Seinfeld has pointed out, we root for laundry. Yes, we already know what Reyes is, but we can give him a second chance, as you point out, people deserve them.
Then there is a matter of his wife. We don't know if this was a one time occurrence or an ongoing problem. He has a family and maybe, just maybe, being back in NY and playing baseball will help preserve that relationship and family. There are few players who played the game with more joy than Reyes - when that was taken away from him, I can imagine him breaking psychologically. I'm not excusing what he did, but in the long run, this could be a good thing for him, his wife, and his family. As well as for us.
