MLB: San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks

Mets Connections: San Francisco Giants

The following is the fourth edition of what is part of each of the series previews here at BP Mets. “Mets Connections” takes a look at the opposing teams’ rosters and highlights some of the noteworthy or interesting links that can be drawn between those players and the Mets organization. Some of these links may be obvious, such as if an opposing player has formerly played for New York, but some may be lesser known tidbits, such as if a player was previously drafted by the Mets. The fourth version of this series analyzes the Giants’ roster as they open up a three game set in New York tonight.
The Giants do not have any former Mets on their active roster coming into the series, but have three players who have been traded for a current or former Met. The following is a list of some the Giants’ most significant Mets connections:
Buster Posey: Posey has never been traded, and he was not drafted near any Mets’ selections, so some may wonder why he appears on this list. A current Met has been traded by the Giants, though, and that player is where the connection lies. Zack Wheeler was drafted by San Francisco in the 2009 draft and signed by scout Sean O’Connor. O’Connor’s most notable signing? Buster Posey.
Mark Melancon: In the 2012 offseason, Melancon was dealt along with ex-Met Stolmy Pimentel by the Red Sox to net Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt from the Pirates. Pimentel never appeared for New York in the majors, but he was part of the organization for the first half of last season.
Bryan Morris: The 2008 three-team trade that sent Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers also included Morris, who headed to Pittsburgh, and former Met Jason Bay, who went to the Red Sox. After spending two solid campaigns in Boston, Bay, of course, came to New York for three uninspiring seasons.
Michael Morse: Now in his second stint with the Giants, Morse was traded in 2004 for former Met center fielder Jeremy Reed. In his only season with the team in 2009, he hit just .242/.301/.304.
Hometown Connections: Two pairs of players facing each other in this series were born in the same city. Jeurys Familia and Giants infielder Eduardo Núñez were born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, while Neil Walker and Giants reliever Derek Law were born in Pittsburgh.
